Golden Gates, Eaton Hall

The finest example of blacksmiths repousee work in the 18th Century. Made by the renowned brothers, Robert & John Davies, it incorporates mythical creatures like griffins and phoenixes, with traditional wrought ironwork.

When we undertook the restoration work the exposed areas had deteriorated to the point where some of the fine detail could not be saved; large areas had just corroded away through time. Fortunately the structural sections were still sound, but needed careful cleaning and painting.

We removed the best samples of the ornate animals and stalactites and our patternmakers built them up to their original form and section. We then made ductile iron castings from them and rebuilt the gates to their original, magnificent format.
