Abercorn Bridge

Full Renovation

This project is an excellent example of restoration work fused with new build. The river Cart is tidal and is also subject to flooding in heavy rain conditions. Over the years the ironwork has been subjected to impact damage from floating objects hitting it when in spate, in addition to occasional damage from immersion in salt water.

Historic Scotland were keen to save as much of the metalwork as possible. We stripped all of the ironwork off the bridge and were able to recover enough castings to rebuild one complete side of the bridge.

For the downstream side new patterns had to be made by our pattershop to make high grade, high impact ductile iron castings (please see our metallurgy section.) The parapets were tested for vehicle impact at the Road research Laboratories and passed with no significant deflection.

Once painted it is hardly possible to tell the difference between the old and the new, a testament to the skills in our works.
